Students can't learn if their nervous system is dysregulated and/or they're missing the executive function skills to self-regulate.
You can help! A quiet prompt or reminder from you can help student start to take steps to self-regulate.
Here are a few tools to get started!
From our "Calm Classroom" collection -- here are some signs that a student is dysregulated and how to help them (thus, co-regulation!)
Focus Cards
Help students become aware of their ability to sustain focus. For each set (primary, elementary/MS, and secondary), the first page has two cards you can print out and cut out to put on all students' desks. At different times you can ask all students to stop and consider how well they are focusing on the lesson or on their work. For students who need more support, you can quietly ask them to point to how they're doing and look for opportunities to commend them, meaning, catch them focusing!
The second page has a chart that can be used by all students so the teacher can pause and ask all to record how well they are focusing in the moment. This can be used across the morning or day to have students self-reflect on their ability to focus on their learning.
